Mark Boling

Mark Boling is a jazz guitarist, teacher, composer, and author.  He leads the Mark Boling TRIO, featuring drummer Keith Brown and bassist Jon Hamar.  The TRIO plays a repertoire of original music and jazz standards with roots in the great guitar trios led by Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, John Scofield and Pat Metheny.  In 2019, the TRIO was featured in concert on the PBS "Live at Lucille's" series. Boling has released four recordings as a leader —  A Writer's Tomorrow, 2019; Trio Life, 2012; Tune Me, 2004; Evidence, 2000. He has performed in concert and recorded with a number of acclaimed jazz musicians, including Donald Brown, Gregory Tardy and Zim Ngqawana.  He has performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival in California, at the Muroran Jazz Cruise in Japan, The Cairo Jazz Festival in Egypt, and on numerous tours in Europe and East Asia. He frequently performs with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. He is the author of Creative Comping Concepts for Jazz Guitar (Mel Bay) and The Jazz Theory Workbook (Advance Music). Boling has been a senior artist-in-residence at the Banff Center International Jazz Workshop, a visiting artist at the Brubeck Institute, and a teacher at Berklee College of Music’s summer guitar program. In 2020, Boling retired from his position as Associate Professor of Jazz Guitar and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of Tennessee.
